Passive Force

Biomechanics

Short definition

Passive force — elastic tension depending only on the stretch.

Full definition

Passive force — tension depending only on stretch, regardless of neural activation: in tendons, aponeuroses and connective tissue, and in the parallel passive elastic element (PE) of the Hill model. It rises exponentially and dominates at long lengths. It contributes to load transfer, joint stabilization, and the spring-like action, especially in jump and stretch-shortening cycles.

Examples

Beyond ~100 % of fiber length the passive component grows rapidly.
