Apparent mass of the hand

ISO 10068 hand-arm biodynamics

Biomechanics

Short definition

Effective hand-arm mass on the bar: 0.2–0.5 kg per ISO 10068; 0.30 kg per hand is used.

Full definition

Apparent mass is the hand force divided by hand acceleration — a frequency-dependent biodynamic property of the hand-arm system (ISO 10068). VibroTheory uses a constant 0.30 kg per hand from the 0.2–0.5 kg range; the dynamic hand force is then F_hand_dyn(f) = m_app · ω² · A_hand(f). A later phase replaces it with a full arm model (OpenSim).

Examples

Dynamic hand force at 25 Hz with A_hand ≈ 0.2 mm is about 0.74 kgf.
