Static Optimization

Biomechanics

Short definition

Method to compute muscle forces from joint torques without activation dynamics.

Full definition

Static optimization solves the muscle-force distribution problem: at each time step muscle activations are chosen so that the net joint torque matches the measured one while a cost (e.g. sum of squared activations) is minimized, without activation dynamics.

Examples

Static optimization of the bench press yields peak triceps activation.
