Force-Velocity Curve

Biomechanics

Short definition

Relationship between muscle force and contraction velocity: eccentric > isometric > concentric.

Full definition

The Hill force-velocity curve shows concentric force decreasing with shortening velocity while eccentric force slightly increases with stretching velocity; isometric force sits in between. In isometric training the velocity is zero.

Examples

In isometric contraction the velocity is zero — a single point on the force-velocity curve.
